SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON CENTRAL LABOR COUNCIL
Vote to approve school district levies for sustainable K-12 schools and strong union jobs
Posted On: Jan 15, 2022

Do you or someone you know live in the Hockinson or Evergreen School Districts? If so, the Southwest Washington Central Labor Council urges you to vote “yes” on the school levies that will appear on your February 8th Special Elections ballot because you will be voting to provide support where it’s needed most: K-12 students.

Students, parents, and education workers in both districts are counting on you to approve replacement levies to fund programs that directly serve students. Though these replacement levies will not cost taxpayers much more than the levies that they replace, they will help students retain the fundamental services they need to succeed in school.

According to Anna-Melissa Lyons, president of the Hockinson Education Association, cutbacks are inevitable if these levies don’t pass. Several good union jobs are on the line including counselors, school psychologists and school nurses. Extra-curricular opportunities will be cut, and class sizes will increase.

In Evergreen School District, you’ll be voting on the Education Programs and Operation Levy. This levy will help pay for: additional teaching staff to help reduce class sizes; safety programs, security officers, school nurses and counselors; performing arts such as band, choir, orchestra and theater programs; field trips, athletics and related activities; and local support to bridge gaps in Special Education, English Language Learners, Highly Capable and Transportation Programs. We urge you to vote yes!

In Hockinson School District, you’ll be voting on the Hockinson School District Replacement Levy. In addition to retaining essential services, this replacement levy will result in new services such as: expanding existing early learning opportunities (preschool and Before/After School Adventures) by adding Transitional Kindergarten at no cost to families; offering two learning formats to suit the needs of each student (in-person and online learning;) and equipping every secondary student with a learning device and internet access for those who need it for online learning – all services that help working families thrive. We urge you to vote yes!

At a time when students need more individualized attention, structured opportunities to socialize and mental & physical health support, these levies are going to mean the difference between a sustainable K-12 education and districts where more students fall through the cracks.

Hockinson and Evergreen School District voters, this is your opportunity to:

  • let your youngest community members know that you have their backs.
  • support strong, union jobs that enhance the community for everyone.
  • help working families grow even stronger.

Make sure to vote to approve these levies and provide your support where it’s needed most!

Voters will receive informational mailers and ballots by mail this month.
